Because the temperature affects the functioning of your battery greatly, then the best auto battery is the one that meets the climate you live in.

That is to say, a battery may work terrifically in one place, but may be worthless in a different climate. If you live in a colder place, especially those with notorious winters, then the best auto battery for you is one with the highest CCA (cold cranking amps) rating as possible. Batteries with lower CCA rating simply cannot start your engine in cold weather. You need to go to great lengths to heat up your battery before it can be useful - not an exciting prospect especially if you're running late to work. Moreover, a maintenance free battery will also work best in colder climate so you want to get this type also.

If you live in a hotter climate, however, you want your HCA (hot cranking amps) to be as high as possible. You don't want your battery to render itself useless after leaving your car next to the curb for just a few minutes. A maintenance free battery may not be the best auto battery for you in hotter climate because you want to regularly check your water level and replace it when it goes down below the desired level.

An additional consideration for the most dependable auto battery is the RC (reserve capacity) rating. It evaluates the ability of a battery to supply twenty-five amps of power before depleting the reserve below 10.5 volts once the alternator or the fan belt has stopped working. You want this rating as high as possible for the next battery that you will buy.
