Club Car Battery Charger

The newer kinds of club car battery charger, although smarter and more efficient, could be a little trickier to use than the older ones. It's common to hear complains that these chargers don't work even if the charger checks out and the batteries are practically new. What is usually true is it cannot charge very weak or totally drained golf cart batteries.

Newer golf cart battery chargers need to sense a charge coming from the battery in order for it to recognize that a battery is attached and it needs to begin charging. A totally dead or a very weak battery cannot send this voltage to the charger so that the charger could not recognize it. The solution, then, is simple - put a little power on the batteries just enough for them to be recognized by the newer electronic charger.

Use an older club car battery charger to deliver a small quantity of power to the battery. Once the batteries obtain enough power, about 31 volts, to send to the newer charger, you can now use your newer, more efficient charger. The 31 volts critical charge level, however, varies from charger to charger.

Since the newer golf cart chargers depend on its circuitry to control the whole charging process, damage in the circuitry could render the charger useless, too. That is why you need to take good care of these chargers; avoid overheating or shocking it frequently.

If you notice that the charger would not stop charging the batteries anymore, this could mean two things. Either the batteries could not hold power any longer or the charger's circuit board is screwed up. Newer electronic chargers can sense the cutoff point of batteries and shuts off automatically if the cutoff is reached. But a screwed up circuit board could fail to recognize this cutoff point or an old battery can no longer hold power enough to reach the cutoff.

Do not run your batteries all the way down. The newer variety of battery chargers will not work on dead batteries. These are just some of the issues that the newer electronic type of club car battery charger has. But the bottom line is newer chargers are still better than the older non-electronic chargers.
