Replace A Car Battery

There are few obvious signs that you can check to see if you need your car battery replaced. Always replace a car battery when you see obvious damage. A crack should be pretty obvious; you'll see a leak somewhere or the water level goes down unusually fast. Or if you know there is damage to the battery casing. Car battery cells used to be easier to get into, but modern batteries are often sealed shut at the factory. Any cracks in the body of the battery could cause hazardous leaks of sulphuric acid or other chemicals. If the battery was not fully clamped down and the car had a sudden shift in direction, the battery could have been damaged.

Some signs are not that obvious. Maybe you noticed that your car is harder to start every morning; normally your first suspect is your battery. Maybe it is no longer holding a charge. Many times the first hint of a battery problem shows up during the starting process. But this could be brought by many reasons. It could be your alternator or it could be the weather. If you have a battery with low CCA (cold cranking amps) rating, you would really find it hard to start after a cold night.

You can remedy this by placing a lamp over your battery during the winter. If the car battery is too weak to provide a sufficient charge to the starter, the solenoid switch will not function correctly. It will make a distinctive clicking sound. This clicking should indicate to the driver that the battery is not fully charged. Extreme weather conditions can do it too. Your last resort, however, is to have your battery tested by a reputable auto parts store. A simple procedure called a load test can be performed to determine if the battery is ready to be replaced. A serviceperson will attach a voltmeter to the battery's terminals while the car is running. A switch on the voltmeter will then change the power load from the alternator to the battery alone. Sometimes a weak alternator will be the culprit, but other times the test will reveal a weak battery not capable of holding a charge. This means the battery must be replaced. Find a customer-friendly mechanic that is known for fair service and let them test it.
